City Name Khan-Uul District, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Project Name Energy efficiency
Status Completed
Time Period 2005-2006

Description of Project

Energy consumption patterns have a great influence on the cleanliness of cities. Inefficient energy use is one of the key issues in most urban centres in the Asia-Pacific region that concomitantly contributes to the rapid deterioration of the urban environment, particularly air pollution and increased emissions of greenhouse gases.

Under the Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment, a demonstration project on end-use energy-efficiency was implemented in the Khan-Uul District of Ulaanbaatar City, Mongolia, by the District in collaboration with the Ministry of Fuel and Energy, the Ministry of Nature and Environment, local and international consultants and ESCAP. The project undertook an energy-efficiency audit and implemented energy-efficiency measures in the buildings of the District during 2005-2006.

The outcomes of the demonstration project were presented and discussed during an international seminar held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on 9 ? 10 May 2006. Participants from Khan-Uul and other districts of Ulaanbaatar City, ministries, other organizations, and media attended the meeting, along with local and national government representatives. International participants included experts on actions to facilitate energy-efficiency action at municipal level from China, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Viet Nam, staff from ESCAP and the Kitakyushu Initiative secretariat, Japan.
