International Workshop on Local Initiatives Addressing Transformation of Lifestyles Towards Achieving Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific 23 June 2006

Background

The “Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment: International Workshop on Local Initiatives Addressing Transformation of Lifestyles towards Achieving Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific” was held on 23 June 2006. The workshop was organized as a pre-event to the 14th Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific (ECO-ASIA), organized by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, which held in the city of Saitama, Japan from 24-25 June 2006.

About ECO-ASIA

The Environment Congress for Asia and the Pacific is an informal meeting of environment ministers in Asia-Pacific region, which is organized and hosted by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan. The aim of this congress is to provide a forum in which environment ministers freely exchange views as well as promote cooperation in the environmental field in this region. Thirteen meetings have been held since 1991.

The Kitakyushu Initiative pre-event on 23 June was a one-day workshop and included the participation of representatives from relevant local governments and initiatives from the Asia-Pacific region to discuss the theme of transforming lifestyles to achieve sustainable development. The focus of the workshop is on local governmental policies and grass-roots activities addressing the transformation of lifestyles that aims at improving the environmental quality and, at the same time, vitalizing local economic livelihoods.

The objectives of this workshop were to share information and experiences on specific aspects of development and implementation of relevant local initiatives and formulate collective voices for further promotion of such initiatives for discussion by ministers at ECO-ASIA .

Outcomes

Outcomes from the workshop include the following:

  • Knowledge and information on different types of local initiatives advocating transformation of lifestyles for addressing two aspects of sustainable development, to be gained and shared
  • Key gaps for promoting such local initiatives to be identified
  • Needs and expectations for enabling national policy measures to be defined, and
  • New partnerships for future cooperation to be created
The key message was presented at Eco Asia 2006 for discussion by the ministers.
